Many times web hosting companies will offer a plethora amount of "automated" features, but when you begin to ask support related issues, often they will point you to a help file or FAQ, and say, sorry, that is a free feature, and therefore we do not offer technical support for it.
Other hosts, on the other hand, may go so far as to install a cgi script for you, and help you configure it, walking you through the process.
Again, the difference is usually decided by price point (how much you pay for web hosting) and by the size of host (is it a smaller hosting company with less than 20 employees?).
You may find that if your smaller hosting company does not actually advertise a particular hosting account feature, that they still will be there to help you. There is no harm in asking for help, and see what type of response you get.. you may be surprised!
